A secondary dwelling, commonly known as a granny flat, is a self-contained residential dwelling located on the same lot as a principal dwelling. A studio is a small detached ancillary structure associated with a principal residential dwelling (36 m2). Unlike a secondary dwelling, a studio does not normally contain kitchen facilities and therefore is not considered an independent residential dwelling.
